LOW VISION CARE

About Low Vision

Low Vision can be described as the best corrected vision with conventional spectacles or contact lenses, which is still insufficient to perform everyday activities and tasks such as reading, writing, driving, television, playing cards, or seeing medication bottles.

The goal of Low Vision of Illinois is to provide a degree of usable vision with a help of sophisticated optical devices and aids, sufficient to do everyday visual tasks.

Doctor Pikus will discuss the issues in a free telephone interview before an appointment is offered.

Vision loss primarily occurs in people over 65 but can happen at any age. Main causes of Low Vision are age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, inoperable cataracts and open angle glaucoma. These and other conditions cause irreversible vision loss but do not cause complete and total blindness. Usually a person is left with "residual" vision that can be useful, especially with the help of low vision devices.
